Steps to make a short film with a small budget...

 Many people have been asking the question. Here is one of the recipes that you can use.

1. Decide on a plot. Don't look for perfection. Write a small paragraph with the idea/story. 
2. Write an outline/review with friends/modify - keep adding and deleting. Once satisfied, you can move to the next step. Take inputs, but don't look for approval from everyone.
3. Write a scene breakup. Narrate it to friends. Use formats from the Internet of your favorite movie for guidance.
4. Write - detail out each scene
5. Think about the characters and their behavior in the story. Discuss and brainstorm
6. Imagine how they will speak. Write the dialogues. Speak it out to check if they sound fine. Record using a mobile phone.
7. Do a shot breakup. Scribble each shot with stick figures to determine angles and shot type.
8. Do a lineup of the drawings you have made and the mobile audio in an editor to get a pre-visualization. Modify till you are satisfied. Add timecode and add numbers to the shots for future reference.
9. Find the actors. Audition, select, and rehearse each scene in a single location. Use the pre-viz to train the actors, if required.
10. List the locations. And make a schedule based on time, weather, etc. Club all scenes in a location to save cost, effort, and time. Get permission in advance.
11. Shoot the scenes location-wise. You can use the actors to assist you. 
12. Dump all the raw footage into a folder.
13. Select the ‘OK’ shots. Edit
14. Add free music and SFX.
15. Add credits. Show to friends from the edit table and make changes if required.
16. Composite and export as digital video.
17. Upload to YouTube.
18. Use social media and digital marketing tools to help drive viewership.

Cinema is mostly an entertainment and communication medium. In rare cases an educational tool. Cinema combines emotions, sound, visuals to deliver a powerful impression that lasts forever.

When Jungle Book and Lion King were released, I went to watch it as a child. My parents took me. Not because I knew English or they wanted me to learn English. But because it was entertaining.

After that soon I started speaking the dialogues in those movies, I never understood what they meant. But I liked the sound of it.

I can assure, if you can make your kids watch Punyakoti, they will pick up the dialogues and keep repeating it. And at some point in life they will feel that Sanskrit is a familiar language and will discover the treasures on the other side of it.

So take them to watch it. They don't need to understand it. Like the working of a medicine need not be understood to make it work. It will do its work anyways.

வழக்கம் போல் சில மூத்த இசை வாத்திய கலைஞர்கள் இசைஞானியின் கலை கூடத்திற்குமுன் குழுமியிருந்தனர். அவர்களுக்கிடையில் சென்னையில் கல்லூரி செல்லும் சில பிள்ளைகளும். உண்ட பிறகு வெப்பத்தை தணிக்க ஐஸ் கிரீம் சாப்பிட்டு கொண்டிருந்தனர். எல்லோர் முகத்திலும் உற்சாகம். எதிர்பார்ப்பு.

படம் புண்யகோடி (www.punyakoti.com). சமஸ்க்ரத மொழியில் வெளிவரும் முதல் முழுநீள அனிமேஷன் படம். சினிமா சரித்திரத்தில் ஒரு மைல் கல்.பெங்களூருவிலிருந்து இவர் தான் இசை அமைக்க வேண்டும் என்று வந்திருந்தனர். சவால்களை சந்தித்தும் சாதனை புரிந்தும் சளைக்காத இவருக்கு இது எம்மாத்திரம்? இந்த 76 வயது இளைஞரும் ஒப்பு கொண்டு விட்டார்.

படத்தில் நான்கு பாடல்கள். அதில் ஒன்று குழந்தைகள் மாயா லோகத்தில் புகுந்து ஜாலியாக பாடும் பாட்டு. ஒரு நாள் முன்பு தான் மெட்டு அமைத்து பாடல் எழுத சொல்லியிருந்தார் மேஸ்ட்ரோ. துள்ளி வரும் வெள்ளம் போல சிரமமே இல்லாமல் வந்த ஒரு சரளமான ட்யூன் - அவருடைய முத்திரை பதிக்க பட்ட ஒரு தங்க பரிசு. காலையில் தான் வரிகளை கேட்டுவிட்டு சரி செய்திருந்தார்.

படத்தின் இயக்குனரும் பாடல் ஆசிரியரும் பக்கத்தில் உணவறுந்தி கொண்டிருந்தனர். இப்போது தானே பாடல் ஓகே ஆகி இருக்கின்றது. பாடல் பதிவு ஆக ஒரு வாரமாவது ஆகும் என்று பேசி கொண்டிருந்தனர். இன்றே ரெகார்டிங் இருக்கும் என்று அவர்களுக்கு தெரியாது. வேறு ஏதோ பட வேலைக்கு வந்துள்ளனர் பிள்ளைகள் என்று மெல்ல சாப்பாட்டை சுவைத்து கொண்டிருந்தனர்.

சாப்பிட்டு விட்டு உள்ளே சென்றதும் பாடல் ஆசிரியரை அழைத்தார், பிள்ளைகளுக்கு பாடல் வரிகளை சொல்லி கொடுக்க சொல்லிவிட்டு உள்ளே சென்று விட்டார் . பதற்றம். ஆசிரியரும் வரிகளை சொல்ல கவனமாக எழுதி கொண்டனர் மாணவிகள்.

இன்போஸிஸ் நிறுவனத்தில் கணினி பொறியாளராக வேலை செய்யும் ரெங்கராஜன் தனது நண்பர் டாக்டர் ஷங்கர் ராஜாராமனுடன் எழுதிய பாடலை சொல்லி கொடுத்து கொண்டிருந்தார். முதல் முறையாக சினிமா பாடல் வரி எழுதுகிறோம் என்பதை விட இசைஞானியின் இசையில் எழுதுகிறோம் என்ற திளைப்பு அவருக்கு.

ஐந்து நிமிடத்தில் வெளியில் வந்தார் இசைஞானி. உள்ளே அழைத்தார்.மாணவிகள் தரையில் அமர, இசை அரசர் கம்பீரமாக இருக்கையில் அமர்ந்து கொண்டார். ஒவ்வொரு வரியாக மெட்டை பொறுமையாக சொல்லி கொடுத்தார். பிள்ளைகளும் கற்பூரத்தை போல் அதை உடனே உள்வாங்கி கொண்டனர். முகத்தில் கனிவு. சிரிப்பு.

ஒத்திகை பாருங்க, இதோ வரேன் என்றார். பதிவு செய்ய மைக் மற்றும் பொறிகளை தயார் செய்தனர் உதவியாளர்கள். சிங்கம் தன் குகைக்குள் வருவது மாதிரி வந்து நின்றுகொண்டார் நம் இசை கடல். பதிவு தொடங்கியது. நன்றாக பாடினர் பிள்ளைகள். எல்லோரும் தேர்ந்த பாடகர்கள் என்பதில் ஐயமில்லை. பாடல் கோர்வையாக ஒரே சுருதியில் இருந்தது. பல்லவி முடிந்தது. நிறுத்த சொன்னார். அதிர்ச்சி.

குழந்தைகள் ஒரே சுருதியில் பாடுமா? குழந்தைகளை போல பாடுங்க என்றார். குறும்பாக ஒரு பெண் பாடி காட்ட - அப்படி தான் என்று உற்சாக படுத்தினார். திடீர் என பதிவு செய்யும் அறையில் சிரிப்பும் கும்மாளமும். அவர்களின் குரல்களில் ஒரு புதிய துடிப்பு. ஒரு சிறு பிள்ளையாக அவர் அங்கே அவதரித்ததை பார்த்த எல்லோருக்கும் பரவசம்.

டேக் என்றவுடன் பாடல் வேறு ஒரு பரிமாணத்தை தொட்டு விட்டதை எல்லோராலும் உணர முடிந்தது. ஆங்காங்கே சின்ன சின்ன திருத்தம். சுருதி சரி செய்ய சில குறிப்புகள். ஒரு இசை பல்கலைக்கழகமே அங்கே வேலை செய்து கொண்டிருந்தது.

பதிவு முடிந்ததும், தான் உருவாக்கிய அதிசயத்தை அவர்களுக்கு போட்டு காட்டினார். ஹே ராம் படத்திற்கு பிறகு இந்த படத்தில் நடந்த ஒரு புதுமையை சுட்டி காட்ட வாயடைத்து போனது வடமொழி படக்குழு.

எதுவுமே நடக்காதது போல் தன் வேலையை தொடர சென்ற விட்டார் நம் கர்ம யோகி.
